Galveston Island, cont'd

bilge every couple of hours - to make sure we didn't sink!  The boat was then towed to a boatyard where it was hauled out.  We had to replace the propeller shaft, and re-pack the stuffing box - along with a few other things.  It was at this point that my sailing partner gave up and went home.  I was stranded in this drab marina/boat yard for two months - no car, no computer, and little money!!  Since this was more of a boatyard than a marina, there were few liveaboards here - so it was quite a lonely two months!  After lying in my bunk bemoaning my fate, for a few weeks, I finally hired a taxi to take me to the bus station and went to Victoria, where Bob was storing my car and trying to sell it for me.  I got the car and my computer.  Suddenly, the world seemed to be a brighter place!!  But as it turned out, I couldn't get a telephone line there to connect to the internet.  I had met a man from the Clear Lake area who suggested that I move the boat up there.  There were more liveaboards and a better chance of making a little money.  I checked out the marina, and they said they would give me the first month's rent FREE if I moved in February!  So Bob came down from Victoria to help fix the bobstay which had broke while at that marina.  Together with him and Andy, we sailed the boat up to Clear Lake.  That is generally, at most, an hour's drive - from Galveston to Clear Lake!  It took us from 8:30 in the morning until 5:00 in the evening to sail it!!!

Well, we started off sailing - had lovely wind of 12 k - but then - as is usual - the wind died and we had to motor!
